I am tremendously excited about this position. It’s the first time in my life that I’m going into a full-time job with the kind of excitement that I’m feeling right now. It’s a realistic kind of optimism — an awareness that every committment brings with it a certain amount of difficulty. That teaching isn’t easy. That it bears a moral responsibility, a duty to do good work and be a steward of students as they develop, intellectually.
But it should be fun, too.
I can’t wait to get back in the classroom. I am currently getting in touch with everyone I know, soliciting writing-exercise suggestions. Which I might compile into a book of writing exercises. Possibly. But possibly not.
