I go to the Latvian Literature Center.

Their website — which offers all sort of interesting books, in a variety of different languages.

We sat around a table for an hour, and had a great discussion about writing — and the differences in the literary landscape in America and in Latvia. And about the role of translation in bringing work to new audiences. Then we took this somewhat awkward photograph. My teeth are glinting.

  1. I think it’s State Department policy that all photos be awkward. Just in case a friendly handshake comes back to haunt you later (*cough* Rumsfeld *cough*).
